چکیده

Salinity is a major constraint for plant growth, development and yield worldwide. Evaluation of large number germplasms in salt-stressed environments may help identify superior salt-tolerant genotypes. The present study dissects the genetic diversity 33 pearl millet genotypes (landraces inbred lines) salinity tolerance through vitro screening at seedling stage. Our results revealed significant reduction total biomass shoot growth salt-sensitive upon exposure to 150 mM NaCl, contrast tolerant showing better characteristics. A differential effect salt treatment on morphological traits was observed by analysis variance (ANOVA), confirming substantial among all tolerance. were clustered into three groups based multiple stress indices. also evaluated using principal component (PCA) key contributing Based these results, four contrasting selected further biochemical molecular analysis. Physiological studies confirmed that might be due higher content osmolytes activity antioxidant enzymes. Similarly, gene expression profiling catalase (CAT), glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH), glutathione reductase (GR), nitrate (NR) profound increase NR GDH transcript levels genotypes, suggesting their role as reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavengers under salinity. overall findings this could utilized candidate mining “omics” approaches, aiming toward resilient crop plants.

Pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br) is a staple food in many developing countries and constitutes the major source of essential nutrients in semi-arid and arid regions of Africa and India. The knowledge about the nutrient content of autochthonous pearl millet ecotypes is scarce. In this study, biochemical analysis of six Tunisian pearl millet ecotypes has been investigated. Results pro...

Agronomic and physiological responses of pearl millet ecotype (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.) to saline irrigation

The objective of this study was to identify morphological and physiological traits for salinity tolerance in Tunisian autochthonous ZZ pearl millet ecotype (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br) under local conditions. ZZ ecotype was cultivated under different levels of salinity and growth parameters, water relations and mineral content were measured. Results showed that ZZ pearl millet ecotype was un...

Efficient regeneration of pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.) from shoot tip cultures.

A simple, genotype-independent and efficient method for plant regeneration using shoot tip explants of pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) was established. Linsmaier and Skoog (LS) medium supplemented with 2,4-dichloro-phenoxyacetic acid (2.5 mg l(-1)) and kinetin (0. 2 mg l(-1)) was used for induction of embryogenic calli. Development of numerous somatic embryos was observed within 10 days after...

Towards Defining Heterotic Gene Pools in Pearl Millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.]

Pearl millet is a climate resilient crop and one of the most widely grown millets worldwide. Heterotic hybrid development is one of the principal breeding objectives in pearl millet. In a maiden attempt to identify heterotic groups for grain yield, a total of 343 hybrid parental [maintainer (B-) and restorer (R-)] lines were genotyped with 88 polymorphic SSR markers. The SSRs generated a total ...
